What’s Got You So Glum?

Ever have those mornings where you wake up feeling a bit down, or perhaps just unusually quiet? It’s not sadness per se, but a reluctance to engage with the world. You just want to sit, be still, and observe the world around you. It’s as if your mind needs a break from the chaos, the hustle, and the daily demands or responsibilities of life. Sometimes, we simply need to sit and be.

I often liken these moods to the changing seasons. Just as we have four seasons each year, our emotions and states of mind also cycle through different phases. Each season gives us a chance to introspect and reflect.

In summer, we bask in the sun, revelling in its warmth and the laughter that comes so easily. But as autumn arrives, there’s a noticeable shift. The days get shorter, the air cooler, and everything seems to take on a more contemplative tone. Change is in the air, and we start to sense the impending stillness of winter.

Winter, often seen as cold and dreary, is my favourite season. It’s a time for quiet, for going inward. Then, just as we start to tire of the cold, spring comes along. The world begins to wake up, spirits lift, and we witness growth and renewal all around us.

Life, much like the seasons, is a balance of opposites. To truly appreciate joy, we must understand sadness. To love the warmth of summer, we must endure the chill of winter. There’s beauty in everything, whether it’s hot or cold, day or night, winter, or summer. It all hinges on how we choose to view it.

On days when I feel particularly glum, whether for a reason or for no reason at all, I turn to something that always lifts my spirits: laughter. Many years ago, I made a pact with myself to laugh at least once a day. It’s a small but powerful commitment that has made a big difference in my life.

I seek out the people who bring out the best in me, who help me feel lighter. It’s not about avoiding my problems but rather approaching them with a sense of lightness. Somehow, everything seems more manageable when I can laugh.

We all have our glum days, but there’s always a way to find a bit of light, even in the darkest of winters. Embrace the quiet moments, reflect on them, and remember that just like the seasons, our moods are temporary and ever-changing. There’s growth and lessons in everything – sometimes, it just takes a different perspective to see it.
