My 86-Year-Old Mom

As Mother’s Day approaches this Sunday (12 May 2024 in South Africa), I find myself reminiscing about the quiet heroism of the woman who raised me. My mom, at 86 years young, embodies a strength that transcends words. She’s not one for fanfare or public recognition – instead, she operates behind the scenes, quietly shaping lives and touching hearts with her unwavering compassion.

Growing up in a rowdy household with eight children, my mom was the silent force that held us together. She never sought attention or praise for her countless acts of kindness, preferring to work tirelessly behind the scenes. Her humility and selflessness were unmatched, and it wasn’t until later in life that we truly understood the depth of her sacrifices.

Despite facing unimaginable hardships, my mom never let her past define her. She carried the weight of loss and grief silently, shielding us from the pain she endured. It wasn’t until we were much older that we learned of some of these hardships. Yet, through it all, she remained steadfast in her love for us, channelling her pain into a fierce determination to give us the life she never had.

My mom was a strict disciplinarian, but her rules were always rooted in love and a desire to see us succeed. She cared deeply about how we presented ourselves to the world, instilling in us the values of respect, integrity, and compassion. She knew the importance of character and led by example, showing us that true strength lies in kindness and empathy.

I often marvel at the superhuman strength it must have taken to raise eight children, especially when we weren’t always angels. Yet, my mom faced every challenge with grace and unwavering resolve. She taught us the value of hard work, resilience, and the importance of family bonds that withstand the test of time.

As Mother’s Day approaches, I find myself filled with gratitude for the woman who shaped me into who I am today. To my mom, with her quiet strength, unwavering love, and boundless resilience, I say thank you. Thank you for being my guiding light, my pillar of strength, and my greatest inspiration. Happy Mother’s Day, Mom. You are the unsung hero of our family, and your legacy of love will live on in my heart forever.

As I reflect on the remarkable individuals who have shaped my life, I realise that true role models aren’t always the ones in the spotlight. They’re the unsung heroes, like my mom, who quietly go about making a difference in the lives of others without seeking recognition or praise. They’re the ones who lead by example, showing us the power of kindness, resilience, and selflessness. So, as we celebrate Mother’s Day and honour the incredible women in our lives, let’s also take a moment to appreciate all the unsung heroes who make a difference every day, often without even realising it. They may not have fancy titles or public accolades, but their impact is immeasurable, and their legacy of love and compassion lives on in the hearts of those they’ve touched. Here’s to the quiet heroes who shape our world in ways big and small.
