I am sure you have heard people tell you they would love to live on an island away from everything and
everyone. I know I have heard this many times over by several people I know, and one thing I know is
that they do not realise that they have created an ideal in their minds that is not so ideal in reality. Sure,
there are many times when all of us feel like getting away from it all, but you have to realise that isolation
from everything and everyone is detrimental to you. You see, this grand idea fails to consider the basic
need of the human, a need that we cannot rid ourselves of.
We all need to interact with other humans, as it is our basic need and one of a social nature. I have seen
enough of Tom Hanks talking to Wilson to know living like that is far from healthy for you. Complete
isolation is maddening and takes a toll on your mental health. This toll eventually affects your physical
health. Do you know what happens to people who end up stranded on islands? That is right, they start
spelling out SOS with rocks on the beach sand. Why the hell are they not jumping for joy, relaxing on the
beach while drinking milk from a coconut? Surely, they are missing out on an opportunity for that epic
island life I hear people talk about.
OK, fine! I know what you are going to say. You might be picturing yourself building a house on this
island and kiting it out from top to bottom for the perfect island life. What, are you a billionaire? I am
being realistic here while you are thinking as if you were a person with large stacks of money in the bank.
Do forgive my ignorance of a middle-class mindset, but more than 99% of the world’s population cannot
afford to live on an island like that. If you wanted to, you would need resources, companies, and many
connections in order to keep your island supplied with everything you need for a good living. However, if
you had that kind of money, I doubt you would live on the island as it would be a vacation home more
than anything else. Most importantly, it would be bragging rights as you tell everyone you meet about
your awesome vacation home that sits on a private island.
Now that my rant is behind me. Allow me to bring it around once more. No matter how much you try to
get away from everyone, there is one person you will never get away from. That being yourself. That is
right! No matter where you go, you will always be there! The reason I mention this is simple. You see
when you isolate yourself from everyone else, you eventually start talking to yourself, and where you
were one, you become two. You now not only have to deal with yourself, but you must now deal with two
versions of yourself.
Beyond the failings of this grand idea, which is too ‘grand’ and epic for my pea brain to understand, the
other error is not considering what you will do on this island and how you will do it. If you are on an
island, it means you are isolated, which means you will not have access to the amenities you love so
much. That toilet you flush daily and never thank for its good service of never leaving a trace of last
night’s meal behind will not be there for you on the island. You will have to find something else to hug
and throw up in after a heavy night of drinking Vodka out of coconuts decorated with a fancy loop straw
and seven umbrellas sticking out the top to remind you that you are not alone, as you have your umbrellas
to keep you company.
I have not convinced you yet, have I? Well, if your heart desires it, then I suggest you go back to bed and
finish that dream of living on an island. As for me, I will stick to dreaming about things I can turn into a
reality, and when you wake from your island dreaming, I suggest you do the same!
